The project presented a novel research vision for green video streaming over Internet of Multimedia (IoM), which is an enhancement to the Internet of Things (IoT). Its prime objective was to enable video streaming as part of the realization of IoT with reduced overall ecological footprint, in terms of energy consumption and CO2 emissions, while maintaining video fidelity as tradeoff with the energy and carbon footprints. The solution consisted of a novel architecture for IoM and a framework that comprised of a new video encoding technique and communication protocols for green communication. The developed IoM architecture was hierarchical in which the existing wired or wireless infrastructure, such as LTE and WiMAX, was exploited at the higher tier, while IEEE 802.11 with new power saving functions was exploited at the lower tier to achieve energy efficient and high data rate links for multimedia devices. The project also investigated the potential of IEEE 802.11 for low power devices and proposed new power saving functions analogous to the reduced function devices with star/mesh topology in order to support high data rate requirements for multimedia devices with the energy consumption comparable to the ZigBee devices.
