Ignite (Formerly National ICT R&D Fund) had earlier funded a technical R&D project ”Health Level Horizon”, Health Level 7 (HL7) Open Source Application For E-Health Services, which facilitated Pakistan becoming an affiliate member of HL7. The aim of this project was to carry out research in healthcare by developing Health Level 7-based software framework in order to provide health services for diverse communities of the world. The envisaged development of HL7 middleware software is focused on healthcare information systems already in use. The objective was to facilitate e-health services interoperable among various domains in the field such as laboratory, patient administration, pharmacy, billing and accounting etc. The system is now running in real environment at CitiLab and Shaukat Khanum Hospital. In addition to this, Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi is interested in a joint venture with SEECS, NUST to implement it in their premises.
